Company Overview
Lakeland is a not-for-profit, community-owned system of care serving the southwest Michigan region of Berrien, Cass and VanBuren counties. In addition to the three hospitals, the system includes walk-in clinics, long-term care, home care, laboratory and radiology services, rehabilitation and other services throughout the region. Lakeland also offers health, safety, wellness and prevention events, classes and programs throughout the year.
Company History
The history of Lakeland HealthCare begins in 1907 with the inception of Mercy Hospital located in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Since that time mergers, consolidations and growth have taken place to create the Lakeland HealthCare system we know today.
Below is an overview of the growth of Lakeland HealthCare:
1907 Mercy Hospital opens in Benton Harbor
1951 Memorial Hospital opens in St. Joseph
1977 Merger of Mercy and Memorial creating Mercy-Memorial Medical Center
1986 Conversion of Mercy Hospital to Clinic Facilities
1992 Mercy-Memorial merges with Pawating Hospital in Niles, Michigan, forming Lakeland Regional Health System
1994 Lakeland Health System Merges with Berrien General Hospital, Berrien Center Michigan
Lakeland's history has created the financially strong institution it is today. We are a not-for-profit, community-owned system of care serving Southwest Michigan - Berrien, Cass and VanBuren counties. In 2002, Lakeland built a state-of-the-art outpatient center in St. Joseph. Lakeland's present day health system consists of the following primary facilities:

Lakeland Specialty Hospital, Berrien Springs
Lakeland Continuing Care Center, St. Joseph
Lakeland Center for Outpatient Services, St. Joseph

Our system includes over 300 physicians offering a wide range of specialties, 360 short-term acute care beds, a Heart Center, a Cancer Care Center, two outpatient Dialysis Centers, and Orthopedic services including a total joint camp.
In addition, our community benefits from services such as health, safety, wellness and prevention events and various instructional courses.
